When Faith Becomes a Crime: The Increasing Persecution of Christians in Modern Democracies

Many people assume that persecution of Christians belongs only to distant lands with the threat of murder and imprisonment. We imagine it happening somewhere else, far from the democratic societies that pride themselves on freedom of speech and freedom of religion.

But Christians are increasingly being investigated, prosecuted, and dragged through years of legal proceedings using draconian legislation and “tricknicalities” (technicalities designed to trick, trip and degrade people) simply for expressing their beliefs!

And it is often justified under a familiar phrase: “the public interest.”

A Doctor, A Bible Verse, and a Criminal Investigation

Take the case of Päivi Räsänen, a Finnish medical doctor and long-serving member of the Finnish Parliament.

In 2019 she posted a message on social media directed at her own church, the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Finland. The church had chosen to participate in a “Pride parade”, and Räsänen publicly questioned whether that decision was consistent with Christian teaching.

She quoted Bible verses to support her position.

  • The tone was not abusive.
  • It was not threatening.
  • It was not directed at individuals.

It was simply a Christian expressing a Christian view about Christian doctrine.

Yet what followed was extraordinary. Ms Räsänen was subjected to a police interrogation lasting more than 13 hours. Authorities opened a criminal investigation for “hate speech!”

The charges did not stop there. Prosecutors also included a pamphlet she had written years earlier about human sexuality and comments she made during a radio discussion.

Even more striking, the Bishop who published the pamphlet Juhana Pohjola was also charged with hate speech.

The legal basis used to pursue the case came from sections of Finnish law originally designed for war crimes and crimes against humanity!…For expressing traditional Christian teaching.

Acquitted… and Prosecuted Again – The punishment is the process

Finnish courts examined the case twice.

Both times they unanimously acquitted Ms Räsänen, ruling that her statements did not constitute a crime and were protected under freedom of speech and religion.

In most democratic systems that would end the matter. But the prosecution appealed again, pushing the case to the Supreme Court of Finland, prolonging the legal battle.

This is where the deeper problem emerges. Even when someone is ultimately cleared, the process itself becomes the punishment.

Years of legal uncertainty. Legal costs. Public scrutiny. Professional pressure. Emotional strain.

The message becomes clear to everyone watching:

If you express views that go against the current Establishment narrative you will be punished and you may spend years defending yourself in court.

The “Public Interest” Justification

Authorities often defend these prosecutions by claiming they are acting in the public interest i.e protecting society from harmful speech.

But the concept of “public interest” is increasingly stretched so broadly that it can justify pursuing almost anyone the Establishment decides to target.

Once the label is applied, the machinery of the state activates:

• Police investigations
• Interrogations
• Prosecutorial appeals
• Lengthy legal proceedings

The result is not merely the punishment of one individual.

It creates a chilling effect across society. Others begin to self-censor. Church leaders become cautious. Public figures avoid speaking openly about their beliefs.

When Speech Becomes State-Approved – The Slow Erosion Of Freedom

The danger lies in a simple question:

Who decides which beliefs are acceptable?

When governments begin defining which moral or religious views are permitted in public discussion, democracy quietly begins to shift.

Because today it may be a Christian teaching on sexuality. Tomorrow it could be a criticism of government policy. The principle is the same: the state becomes the arbiter of acceptable belief. History shows that once this boundary moves, it rarely stops.

This case is not about Ms Räsänen personally, but about whether ordinary citizens, clergy, and elected representatives can speak freely about their faith without fear of prosecution.

If the answer to that becomes “no,” democracy changes in a profound way. In fact, democracy disappears. Because freedom of speech is not measured by how well we protect popular opinions. It is measured by how we treat unpopular ones.

The Real Warning

Across Europe and other Western democracies, the boundaries of speech are being redrawn through legal interpretation rather than public debate.

Laws designed for serious harm are increasingly applied to ordinary expression. And once a precedent is established, it can be expanded. The danger is not just that one person is prosecuted. The danger is that millions quietly decide it is safer to remain silent.

Why This Matters To You

For centuries, Western democracies have been built on two fundamental pillars:

Freedom of speech
Freedom of religion

These freedoms allow citizens to debate ideas, express convictions, and challenge prevailing norms without fear of punishment. If those freedoms become conditional — dependent on whether authorities deem a belief acceptable — they cease to be freedoms at all.

They become permissions. And permissions can always be withdrawn.

Your Choice Ahead

Ms Räsänen’s case is still awaiting a final decision from Finland’s Supreme Court. It has been seven years since it first started!

Its outcome will have implications far beyond one country. It will signal whether democratic societies remain places where people can speak openly about their beliefs — or whether certain convictions are slowly being pushed outside the boundaries of acceptable discourse.

Because when peaceful expression of faith can trigger criminal investigations…It is not only Christians who should be concerned. It is anyone who values freedom itself.

That is why Lighthouse will shortly be bringing out publications that will expand further on why Christian Citizens and every other citizen that argues against the Establishment’s agenda will find themselves increasingly marginalised. As part of these publications we will be sharing methods and strategies that will enable us to protect ourselves individually and collectively.

We would love to hear your thoughts on these publications and this article below.

God bless Päivi Räsänen for standing up for her Christian faith despite the consequences she has had to face. This is a clear example of the Establishment wanting to take away the freedom of citizens and trying to control people. It shows the importance of acting on our values and recognising that we have a choice. We can either stay silent or we can choose to stand up against injustice.

Thank you for this article, and I pray that Päivi Räsänen receives justice.

God bless Päivi Räsänen. As she said, the process is the punishment and she has been willing to endure this over the course of years. It’s evident in the way that she expresses herself is that it’s not about protecting some form of inflated identity, it’s about standing up for her Christian faith and others who feel intimidated to express their Christian faith.

What’s troubling is how quickly sincere Christian belief is being reframed as something dangerous or unacceptable in societies that claim to value freedom. The shift is subtle but real — faith that once shaped these cultures is now treated with suspicion. When simply praying, expressing belief, or holding biblical convictions becomes controversial, it raises serious questions about what “freedom” actually means anymore. God bless Päivi

This is an important reminder that pressures against Christian faith are not limited to distant countries but can appear within modern democracies as well. Freedom of conscience and belief should matter to everyone, and articles like this encourage people to reflect seriously on where society is heading.

God bless Päivi Räsänen. The Public Interest is a concept so abused that it is increasingly scary how these articles are becoming the norm. Everyday Christians are being arrested for expressing their views. We must come together to protect ourselves.

God bless Ms Räsänen. She reminds me of the likes of Corrie Ten Boom, with perseverance in her faith to Christ. Being overtly attacked is one thing, but I see this even more pernicious attack, that is a death by process/ bureaucracy. It’s a slow grind, sapping time, energy, through paperwork, through administration. It makes people want to give up because it’s so exhausting. I know that same kind of reality, where I’ve been taught to be afraid of saying the wrong thing to the wrong person, instead of being free to say the truth. It’s not just about free speech, it’s actually far deeper, to attack what is regarded as true, right and wrong. Please Lord grant me the mercy and strength to be someone of truth always.

God bless Päivi Räsänen for her love, faith and courage for God, I pray she receives the justice she deserves.

The insidious message the Establishment present is that Christianity poses some dangerous threat to the public, scamming citizens into believing that they are concerned for the wellbeing of the public, playing on their fears and weaponising the principle of public interest.

The need for the unification of Christian’s globally is urgent so we can protect our freedoms and support brothers and sisters like Päivi Räsänen when we are inevitably attacked and persecuted.

God bless us all!
When we can no longer share views that are different to the governments or societies then everyone is in great danger.

Weaponising the state, using laws that were first established for unrelated matters, using the process as the punishment, unjustly and ridiculously targeting those who challenge and go against the establishment, and of course the claim that this is all being done “in the public interest” in order to appear virtuous… this all sounds and feels very familiar. It also goes to show that such agendas and tactics are not localised to certain countries, but this is a globalised agenda of a global establishment that has seized control of all major global institutions, worldwide. The only thing holding them back at this point is the need to parade and at least appear to be acting in a “democratic” and “free” way, while abusing those terms as far as they can to oppress, intimidate and control the masses further and further into tyranny. God bless Ms Räsänen, who has clearly been targeted by the establishment and may God protect and use her for His glory.

God bless Päivi Räsänen for standing strong in her faith to endure the undoubted process designed to punish and destroy her.

I pray for Päivi Räsänen and her courage to stand up for what is right and true. It is getting harder and harder for us to stand up for what we believe, for what is right. God gave us free choice, but the establishment is trying to take that away from us. Christians are under constant attack, and this is why we need to stand together as the Body of Christ.

Such a critical article, thank you, God bless you
